Geliat Perbatasan, Geliat Palapasang

oleh: Henry Adrian

Palapasang is a settlement located in the border of Indonesia and Malaysia in West Kalimantan. The location is isolated and doesn’t have the connecting road. The only way to Palapasang is through the river.
Palapasang population live below the poverty line and depend their income by farming. Once a week they sell their farming product to Malaysia through illegal path in the forest because the expense to sell their farming product to Entikong, the nearest subdistrict capital within Indonesia border could be one million per trip.
In all its limitations, Palapasang continues to survive. Their spirit can be seen from a cross shaped wooden monument located in the middle of their settlement. This monument is a reminder if decades ago, almost half of the population in this village died of diarrhea.
